Lake Mutanda is nestled in the foothills of the Virunga Mountain Range, at an altitude of 1,800 metres. The three volcanoes within the range, that are partly located in Uganda, namely: Mount Muhabura, Mount Sabinyo and Mount Gahinga, can be viewed from Lake Mutanda. There are several islands in the lake. The lake is drained by the Rutshuru River, which flows northward to Lake Edward. Uganda, 2016.
The fur of the mountain gorilla, seen in the image is often thicker and longer than that of other gorilla species, and enables them to live in colder temperatures. Gorillas can be identified by nose prints unique to each individual. Males, at a mean weight of 195 kg upright standing height of 150 cm usually weigh twice as much as the females, at a mean of 100 kg and a height of 130 cm . This subspecies is on average the second largest species of primate. Biwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda, 2016.
Rothschild's giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis rothschildi) is one of the most endangered giraffe subspecies, with only a few hundred members in the wild. It is named after the Tring Museum's founder, Walter Rothschild, and is also known as the Baringo giraffe, after the Lake Baringo area of Kenya, or as the Ugandan giraffe. All of those living in the wild are in protected areas in Kenya and Uganda. In 2007, Rothschild's giraffe was proposed as actually a separate species from other giraffe and not a giraffe subspecies. While giraffes in general are classified as Least Concern, Rothschild's giraffe is at particular risk of hybridization, as the population is so limited in numbers. Very few locations are left where Rothschild's giraffe can be seen in the wild, with notable spots being Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya and Murchison Falls National Park in northern Uganda.
