Fishing on stilts is a centuries old tradition in several areas of Sri lanka. Although beautiful to look at, these fishermen have very hard lives. Perched on uncomfortable stilts for hours, exposed to the elements in the hope of catching a few tiny fish that they can sell for next to nothing. Its no surprise that many of them have taken to pose for tourists instead. However, tourists are not usually around at six in the morning for the sunrise, so photographing them at this time guarantees a genuine experience. Vardena, aged 67 is a local fisherman from Unawatuna. Vardena has been fishing almost every day for as long as he can remember. But what nature gives, sometimes it takes away. In 2004 the ocean that he loves so much took away what he loved the most. Vardena lost his wife and son to a devastating Tsunami that also left him homeless and without a boat.
