Lake Petén Itzá is the second largest lake in Guatemala after the Izabal Lake. The city of Flores, the capital of El Petén, lies on an island near its southern shore.
Zunil situated close to the city of Quetzaltenango is situated at the foot of a huge volcano by the same name. Sitting on the banks of the Salama river Zunil is a quiet town with a lively market and home to San Simón (also known as Maximón), a life-sized mannequin representing a Maya god, sitting in a wooden throne, which is moved to a different house every year, and many people visit and leave gifts at his shrine.
