A man sits outside his home in the blue town of Chefchaouen.
Chefchaouen's blue walls are a popular subject of interest. There are several theories as to why the walls were painted blue. One popular theory is that the blue keeps mosquitos away, another is that Jews introduced the blue when they took refuge from Hitler in the 1930s. The blue is said to symbolize the sky and heaven, and serve as a reminder to lead a spiritual life.

Skoura’s defining features remain its mudbrick kasbahs and vast Unesco-protected palmeraie, earning the moniker ‘Oasis of 1000 Palms.’ Under this green canopy, a 15-mile patchwork of carefully tended garden plots are watered by an ingenious, centuries-old khettara system of locks, levers and canals. More than 100 bird species flourish here.

Chefchaouen, Morocco’s blue city, is a truly beautiful town with appropriately blue walls and majestic mountains overlooking the characterful town. A town as rich in history as it is beautiful, Chefchaaouen was established in 1471 when Moorish and Jewish people fled here to escape the Reconquista of Spain.

The old medina at night.
Chefchaouen boasts one of the most enjoyable, funky medinas in all of Morocco. Though trekking up and down the hillside can make for some sore legs at the end of the day, luckily there are plenty of cafés to plop down and recharge. Unlike the medina of Marrakech or the Kasbahs of Tangier and Rabat, foreigners haven’t really been able to purchase old houses and convert them to upscale riads so many of the local populace still actually lives in the Medina. The people of Chefchaouen are, for the most part, really pleasant and foreigners can stroll through the blue walled medina without being harassed by touts and venders too much. Most of the shop keepers have a relaxed attitude and will not hassle you.
